An Aboriginal elder of the Ngarinyin people, David Mowaljarlai, told me in 1996 that 'spirituality is coming back in Australia'. 'This is a spirit country', he said, 'and we will all have to face the sacredness of the land'. David Mowaljarlai's 'all' in this sentence obviously included white people as well as black people, since he was talking to me and including me in the conversation.
